The Battlecat Energy Partners (BCEP) team has over 100 years of collective experience in the oil and gas industry.  In addition, BCEP manages our operating partner, Battlecat Operating Company, which operates the assets in which we invest.

Mark Semmelbeck, Ph.D. - Managing Partner

Dr. Semmelbeck is a Founder and Managing Partner of Battlecat Energy Partners. Dr. Semmelbeck oversees well stimulation, reservoir engineering, land, GIS, and geology.  He is a member of the Investment Committee.  Prior to BCEP, Dr. Semmelbeck co-founded and led Battlecat II in 2014 until its sale to a public company in 2017. From 2004 to 2010, Dr. Semmelbeck was a founding partner of Escondido Resources I and II. In 1999, Dr. Semmelbeck and Mr. von Plonski founded Battlecat I.  Prior to forming Battlecat I, Dr. Semmelbeck was at Enron Oil & Gas Co., leading its Permian Basin acquisition efforts beginning in 1998.  Dr. Semmelbeck also held positions at Schlumberger and S.A. Holditch & Associates.


Dr. Semmelbeck is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and American Association of Petroleum Geologists. He serves on the advisory council of the Texas A&M Engineering Entrepreneurship Program and has published numerous technical papers for the Society of Petroleum Engineers. Dr. Semmelbeck is Chairman and founding board member of His Voice Global (HVG), a non-profit serving vulnerable children and women in South Sudan, Kenya, and Uganda. 


Dr. Semmelbeck received his Bachelor of Science in 1983, Master of Science in 1985, and Ph.D. in 1995, all in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M University.

Kurt von Plonski, P.E. - Managing Partner

Mr. von Plonski is a Founder and Managing Partner of Battlecat Energy Partners. Mr. von Plonski is responsible for the operational direction of BCEP, focusing on drilling, completion, production operations, and regulatory/environmental activities. He is a member of the Investment Committee.  Prior to BCEP, Mr. von Plonski co-founded and led Battlecat II in 2014 until its sale to a public company in 2017.  From 2004 to 2010, Mr. von Plonski was a founding partner of Escondido Resources I and II.  In 1999, Mr. von Plonski and Dr. Semmelbeck founded Battlecat I.  In addition, Mr. von Plonski is the founder and Chairman of Sentry Technologies, Inc. (STI), a manufacturer of remote monitoring and control products to the oil and gas industry.  Prior to Battlecat I and STI, Mr. von Plonski also held positions at LTX Productions and Sumbera & Associates. 


Mr. von Plonski is involved with Houston’s Homeless Prevention through West Houston Assistance Ministries. He is also a Director of The Texas Historical Foundation.


Mr. von Plonski graduated in 1983 from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering and is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas.

Jamie Liang, CFA - Managing Partner

Mr. Liang has over 16 years of experience in finance, investment banking, and investment management. Mr. Liang is a Founder and Managing Partner of Battlecat Energy Partners, where he oversees fund administration, finance and accounting, compliance, investor relations, and business development.  He is a member of the Investment Committee.  Prior to BCEP, Mr. Liang was a Partner and the Chief Financial Officer of Battlecat II up until its sale to a public company in 2017.  He has been involved in over $20 billion of transactions throughout his career. His previous experience encompasses debt and equity capital raising, project and structured finance, public finance, and mergers and acquisitions advisory. Prior to Battlecat II, Mr. Liang served as a Director at Bank of America Merrill Lynch and began his career at UBS Investment Bank where he executed project financings in the infrastructure sector.


Mr. Liang is a member of the Houston Producer’s Forum, Houston Energy Finance Group, ADAM-Houston, the Independent Petroleum Association of America, and the CFA Society of Houston. He serves or has served on the St. John’s School Alumni Board, the Rice University Annual Fund Committee, the Rice Alumni Volunteers for Admissions, and as the regional head of the Wharton Energy Network. 


He received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Rice University and a Master of Business Administration in Finance and Entrepreneurial Management from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, he holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a member of the CFA Institute.

Cindy Jones - Director of Accounting and Compliance

Ms. Jones is the Director of Accounting and Compliance for Battlecat Energy Partners and has over 40 years of oil and gas accounting experience. She has been with BCEP since its formation and assists with finance, accounting, compliance, and administration. Ms. Jones previously served as Director of Accounting for Battlecat II, where she was part of the founding team and managed the Lease Operating Statements, Joint Interest Billing, Revenue, and Accounts Payable functions. Prior to Battlecat II, Ms. Jones worked at Sentry Technologies, Inc., a small oilfield manufacturing company, where she was head of accounting for 14 years. Previously, she spent over 20 years working for Heritage Exploration and Production as Director of Accounting, where she was responsible for preparing financial statements reporting, interacting with outside auditors and advisors, and investor relations. Prior to Heritage, she worked for a small CPA firm. In addition to her role at BCEP, Ms. Jones manages her family’s oil and gas investments in Texas.


Ms. Jones is an alumnus of Houston Baptist University and the University of Houston. She is also a Certified Bookkeeper.

Andrew Fisher - Senior Acquisitions Engineer

Mr. Fisher is the Senior Acquisitions Engineer for Battlecat Energy Partners. Mr. Fisher is responsible for screening and evaluating deals, as well as developing and refining an engineering and geologic model for the South Texas region.  For three years prior to the formation of BCEP, Mr. Fisher served as an Operations Engineer and Reservoir Engineer for Battlecat II up until its sale to a public company in 2017.  At Battlecat II, he was responsible for optimizing production with artificial lift and managing field level operations. He has also worked with Halliburton, Pioneer Energy Services, and Carrizo Oil & Gas in various roles, including drilling, completion, and production engineering for Eagle Ford shale wells. Mr. Fisher is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and is involved with Houston Welcomes Refugees, a non-profit aiding the resettlement process for refugees coming to Houston.


Mr. Fisher received his Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M University.
